Kava
A root, not a leaf
Pressed from the roots of a Pacific pepper plant commonly found in Hawaii, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and other Polynesian islands. On these islands, the root serves as a tool for bonding, formal diplomacy, and relaxing at the end of the day.
Exotic Tea
A leaf, steeped
Kratom — a tree leaf from Southeast Asia, brewed like tea. It's often served as red, white or green. The color references the different age of the leaf, and what alkaloids are prominent.
Coffee
Grown and roasted here
Puerto Rican beans, roasted on the island and pulled fresh all day.

Questions

Where can I drink kava in San Juan?

At La Cala Kava & Teahouse, 2016 Calle Loíza, Local A, in Santurce. We pour fresh kava by the shell, in a 32 oz bowl for the table, or in a 64 oz growler to take home.

Do you serve kratom?

Yes. Our exotic tea is kratom — a leaf from Southeast Asia, brewed like tea and served green, white, or red in 16 oz or 24 oz, with flavors like passion fruit and mango.

Is La Cala an alcohol-free bar?

Yes. No liquor — just kava, tea, coffee, and fresh coconuts, and a place to build community with a good drink.

Is your coffee from Puerto Rico?

Yes. Our beans are grown about an hour away and roasted twenty minutes from the shop, then pulled fresh all day.

Is it a good place to meet people?

That's the point. Come sit, share a bowl, and meet the neighborhood. Live music and events are posted weekly on Instagram @lacala_pr and in our WhatsApp group.

What are your hours?

Wednesday to Sunday, 9am to 9pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes. Dogs are welcome at La Cala — bring them along.
